Figure seated

This was our model at the work session this week. Just a cell phone picture so it's not the best quality.

Napa Valley

I decided to try my hand at a speed-scape once again. It's been a while and I'm rusty - hopefully I can keep a few of these coming and tighten up the old skills. (35 mins)

Blizzard N00bz Contest Winner - Ghoulash

I entered a contest at my work to paint a custom reproduce-able 'n00bz' character. My team mate & friend Julien Lefebvre presented the idea to Blizzard & it looks like it stuck! Blizzard is working with Big shot Toyworks to mass produce these. There was also a part of the contest for custom non-repro toys that were very original with tons of mods - all of which were on display at Blizzcon! The 3 winners (located here) were all for sale as well as the 'Raynor' (Starcraft) model which was given away as part of the Blizzcon 'Goody Bag.'

My entry 'Ghoulash' shown at Blizzcon above. Also included is a quick spot Direct TV did on the winners. Here is my section as it played at the Blizzcon store right next to the main panel's audience that you hear in the background:

skinny girl

I tried to do a long pose here with Contè pencil. It's a pretty unforgiving medium but I managed to lose a few edges. The light we currently have at work is way too ambient. I'm hoping to get more of a direct light to create more dramatic shadows.

Seated Figure

Study of a model done at my after work session. 3 hour pose. I really enjoyed the cloth study in this one. Great folds and pleats - though I wish it had been a 5 hour pose.

Old Smokey

This is a work in progress. His name comes from that song about a meatball... I'm not sure what inspired me to paint him, but I have to take a break from him to work on some freelance stuff. I'll post the final once I get some personal time again.

I have taken a couple nights after work and painted this for 1 hour a night for 2 nights. I miss the snow, living down here in California.

emo girl

I came across this picture my friend had in his reference folder and painted it during breaks & at lunch. I added some stars. I really enjoyed knowing that I didn't have to go to a meeting about this or show it to anyone at work.

Life Drawing

I have had to take a break from figure drawing for about this whole past year due to crazy commutes and living far from my work. Blizzard just began offering some life drawing sessions after work. SO... I blame any lameness on just being tired.

Sculpture

Here is my clay sculpture for a monster mask I am making.
I have recently taken a class from a hollywood 'monster mask' maker: Jordu Schell.

His specialty is in latex masks and appliances or parts of masks that are applied with make up to actors faces. He has worked on loads of films, most recently probably Aliens vs Predator and some painting monsters on Cloverfield.

Cool and demented art, here is his studio gallery: http://schellstudio.com/sculpture.htm

I have cast this sculpture and poured a latex mask that I will paint. I will post more pics as I go!

10 minute Lunch Drawing

I decided to start posting sketches more often. Maybe a finished piece here or there too!

Fire Witch

California (my current home state) is currently on fire everywhere! Each big fire has a name... the biggest one is called the "witch fire." Fitting the season, I couldn't help but imagine the culprit that started it.

(sorry I don't post as much lately - I worked on this one for 5 minutes at a time over this month)

Frog Guard

I am finally sketching again. I guess I have settled in enough to draw strange little frogs. I didn't have a reason to draw this guy - he just kind of came out.

MTR Concept II

Due to the success of my last post - I thought I had better post one more piece of concept art from Disney's Meet the Robinsons Game. This is a Pismo Handle - it's primary function is to open gates. There are 4 styles for 4 different regions that it appears in the game!

Meet The Robinsons Game Concept

I finally decided to jump on the bandwagon and actually post some of the work I have done over the last year with Disney. These first two pictures are level designs for the Emperor Stanley Dungeon areas. This is one of the Darker areas in the game - it was really fun to design - Lots of metal and glass surfaces, mixed with rock walls (as most of this area is built into a volcano)!

Monstery

Well how original of me - this guy is a monster and I've come up with this clever name: 'monstery'.

Again one of those scary looking - but really nice on the inside - kind of monster; quite the handsome fellow.

House in Field - Repost

I think this is my favorite. Don't worry if you've already seen this one, I will post again soon!

Golf Course Speedpaint

I finally got some time to return to the speedscapes! Hope it's not a disappointment.

SURPRISE ! ! !

I drew this on a piece of paper for my friend Tanya's surprise birthday party since I didn't have a present. Then I realized I had to paint it so I took a quick digital picture and brought it home.

New Monster

This is monster with a little bit of a happier disposition. Although he may seem innocent, he's very hungry!

God of the Deep

This is a late post for the 'Gods of Nature' subject on the Avalanche Software art blog. It was originally kind of inspired by tattoo art, maybe something an old seasoned sailor would have on his entire back.

At last...

I've had a lot of distractions lately - a slipped disc, a week of bronchitis, and on and on... BUT luckily I remembered that I love painting. I came back and tried another 30 min. speed paint and I think this one turned out my favorite. Hope I can do more like this.

Happiest Dog Ever

This was a drawing created for my work blog, we have a weekly or bi-weekly challenge. The subject was to draw something "too cute." I didn't want to go so far that I grossed myself out, so I figured - puppies are cute... especially when they are happy.

"Bowling Hall Bandit"

This is the not so Infamous "Bowling Hall Bandit"

His trademark qualities are:

1) Blatent disregard for bowling hall etiquite.

2) Persistent wearing of non-league uniforms.

3) General hooliganry.

Gesture sketches

Just a couple of Gesture sketches I have done over a few sessions in random places. It's a good way to keep yourself from getting rusty. These ones were done in about 5 to 10 minutes. I really enjoy gesture as an exercise to learn about form and big shapes.

Bad guy dragon monster?

I don't typically draw dragons, or many 'beasts' of any sort, so for this posting I am entering a whole new realm of art. I was thinking that if I deviate too much from my style, that it would lose everyones interest... Luckily I came to my senses and realized that I don't really have a style. So I have decided to begin posting more types of things, and hopefully continue with the speed paintings also!

Hay!!

I call this one hay. Not to be confused with 'hey'! Just for your information. I love the simplicity of the single hay bale in a field.

Studies

I have been looking at some master painters and decided to try copying some of my favorites digitally. This is Thayer's 'Angel', for time sakes I could only do a face study.

I also threw on my latest 'speedscape' of the day. 1/2 hour again. Hope you enjoy

Speed Paintings

A few of the guys I work with have committed to doing a daily speed painting, 30 minutes, in painter. So far they have been landscapes. It's a great challenge and I feel like I am learning a lot from it! Check'em out... let me know what you think. I have posted the latest two, more to come later.

Santa Welding!

No he's not vandalizing that population sign. My sister in law works at a company that makes all of the road signs and barriers for all of Utah, they needed a Christmas card this year that was somewhat relevant to not only Christmas, but to their line of work. So here it is, YAY.

Old house - Green hills

I have been wanting to do something more 'landscape-ish' since I did that little backyard sketch below. This is definitely more of a landscape, but there just happens to be a house in it too. I think its somewhere in europe or more likely somewhere I just made up.

Happy Thanksgiving weekend everyone!

This is an older picture of a cute dinosaur who hates broccoli. I would like to touch him up some time. I am using the smaller picture as my avatar.

5:00 am

I got up at 5:00 am today. and then I painted this. Yes it was somewhat inspired by Ryan Wood's Latest queen posted at avalanchesoftware.blogspot.com, but hopefully it has some of my personality come with it... I am really trying to learn about skin and color.

Space Jester?

I am not really sure what this guy is supposed to be, my wife doesn't like him one bit. This was an exploration of light for me, with a pinch of creepiness.

I painted it pretty big, so heres a detail view also.

So heres the deal

I got a job at Avalanche Software and everyone has a blog... and I wasn't cool cuz I didn't have a blog. So, I go to sign up and what do I find? Oh snap! I already made one - two years ago! I totally forgot... But how exciting to find out all over again!

this is an old factory or some greenish-blueish thing.

Magic man
this is a little monster I drew, I think
I will color him, then I'll put him back up here again.

I did this tree for Jeff B. to see if I could get a job.
