World of Warcraft Trading Card work (2)

I have recently done a few more art pieces for World of Warcraft's Trading Card Game.  These are a few of my latest - the large one is a different format because it's a "Hero" card.  It gets published larger.  I would never dream up this content on my own, so it's pretty interesting to work on.  These are of course all copy protected by Blizzard Entertainment.

Head Study

I typed the word 'face' into google tonight and found this image.  I enjoyed doing a head study over about 40 minutes. It's a drawing of Anne Hathaway, (digital painting I guess) who was selected to play Catwoman! ...could be pretty cool if she looks dark enough... her roll in 'Rachel Getting Married' gives me hope! also I couldn't stand Halle Berry as Catwoman, but Michelle Pfeiffer held her own for a blondey!

My Oldest Sketches

I found these 2 pictures... I think that they are the oldest drawings I have record of.  It was 1984 so that would make me about 7 years old.  I loved drawing motorcycles out of my dad's dealer pamphlets.

This happened in our lunch sketch group today.  Maybe it's all the talk about football season going on right now, or maybe i just wanted to draw bears.

World of Warcraft Trading Cards art

These are 2 of the first WoW trading cards I did for WOW TCG (world of warcraft trading card game). I'm currently working on my fourth one. I really enjoy painting these - relaxing at home doing art. artwork copyright Blizzard Entertainment 2009

Space Station

We had the theme of rural space life in our sketch group tonight at work. I made this station somewhat related to the shape of a jelly fish.

1st sketch on New Cintiq

I'm really tired and it's been a very long work week, but I just got my new cintiq and had to do a sketch to make sure it's real! I've been saving up for a long time- so excited to get more art in!

Blizzard Sketch Group

A few co-workers and I do a sketch group from time to time after work to keep ourselves drawing. This week the reference ranged from old russian color photos, to howitzer guns and aardvarks. I went for a pretty literal mix of the three. Here's the result (Colored at home after)

Iain McCaig @ Blizzard!!

Wow - so this was a monumental day at Blizzard. We sometimes have guest artists come and present a lecture or demo. I was amazed today to be in the presence of Ian McCaig (yeah he concepted Darth Maul and Princess Amidala- a couple small accomplishments). He gave an amazing demo and encouraged us to sketch while he did. The amazing part is that Brom (amazing dark fantasy artist) works for Blizzard sometimes too and we got to watch Ian sketch Brom! whoa. Here are a few of my junky sketches from during it and top right is a quicky of Brom.

Napa Valley

I decided to try my hand at a speed-scape once again. It's been a while and I'm rusty - hopefully I can keep a few of these coming and tighten up the old skills. (35 mins)

Blizzard N00bz Contest Winner - Ghoulash

I entered a contest at my work to paint a custom reproduce-able 'n00bz' character. My team mate & friend Julien Lefebvre presented the idea to Blizzard & it looks like it stuck! Blizzard is working with Big shot Toyworks to mass produce these. There was also a part of the contest for custom non-repro toys that were very original with tons of mods - all of which were on display at Blizzcon! The 3 winners (located here) were all for sale as well as the 'Raynor' (Starcraft) model which was given away as part of the Blizzcon 'Goody Bag.'

My entry 'Ghoulash' shown at Blizzcon above. Also included is a quick spot Direct TV did on the winners. Here is my section as it played at the Blizzcon store right next to the main panel's audience that you hear in the background:

Talk Show

Old Smokey

This is a work in progress. His name comes from that song about a meatball... I'm not sure what inspired me to paint him, but I have to take a break from him to work on some freelance stuff. I'll post the final once I get some personal time again.

2 hr Paint

I have taken a couple nights after work and painted this for 1 hour a night for 2 nights. I miss the snow, living down here in California.

I came across this picture my friend had in his reference folder and painted it during breaks & at lunch. I added some stars. I really enjoyed knowing that I didn't have to go to a meeting about this or show it to anyone at work.

Sculpture

Here is my clay sculpture for a monster mask I am making.
I have recently taken a class from a hollywood 'monster mask' maker: Jordu Schell.

His specialty is in latex masks and appliances or parts of masks that are applied with make up to actors faces. He has worked on loads of films, most recently probably Aliens vs Predator and some painting monsters on Cloverfield.

Nintendo DS drawing

I decided to start posting sketches more often. Maybe a finished piece here or there too!

Fire Witch

California (my current home state) is currently on fire everywhere! Each big fire has a name... the biggest one is called the "witch fire." Fitting the season, I couldn't help but imagine the culprit that started it.

(sorry I don't post as much lately - I worked on this one for 5 minutes at a time over this month)

Frog Guard

I am finally sketching again. I guess I have settled in enough to draw strange little frogs. I didn't have a reason to draw this guy - he just kind of came out.
